“Nell’s Story”
Secondary RSHE Scheme of Work
“I enjoyed how it wasn’t just one lesson, like the usual facts and information almost like a letter it was spread and we got to see how the story unfolded and progressed until we got the final message.”
Year 9 Girl, Swanwick Hall School
Starting in November 2015, Gertie Whitfield worked with Professor Alison Twells on developing a RSHE resource looking at sexual exploitation based on the diary of a teenage girl, Nell, written during World War II. The resource can be used as part of the spiral RSHE curriculum.
Nell’s diary is fascinating. The resource includes diary extracts, some letters to Nell from Fred, a sailor, and some WW2 visual images such as cartoons and posters.
“The story is engaging and intriguing. It has overlaps with other school subjects. It is a primary source which provides a literacy- based resource.”
Claire Nulty, PSHE Leader Swanwick Hall School
Teachers particularly relished how the resource also contributed to the English curriculum. It was interesting to note that few of the students commented on the amount of reading needed. Indeed one student even said it had hooked them on reading!

“It worked well because the idea behind the story was good as it wasn’t in your face. The gradual build-up of the story meant the penny dropped for students at different times.”
Amy Roe, Year 9 Tutor Swanwick Hall School
The trials in 2016 enabled the resource to be adapted and improved. The resource reflects student and teacher feedback. In 2019, the resource was updated, and Section 5 was added in response to feedback.
“It raised so many questions for them - they were discussing it outside PSHE lessons.”
